Stuttgart, 5 July - 3 members of Hugh Masekela's band, Abednigo Sibongiseni (Fana) Zulu (Bass), Lee-Roy Sauls (Drums) and Francis Manneh Fuster (Percussion) team up with the Sawubona Acustic Band, Werner Acker (Guitar), Annette Kienzle (Vocals), Mthunzi Fesi (Vocals), Ekkehard Rössle (Saxophone), Albert Mayer-Mikosch (Acustic Guitar) and Eckhard Stromer (Percussion) for songs "Rainbow Scatterings", "Collecting The Money" and "A Word". The band started the concert with Brian McDonald's "Soweto, June 1994".

The concert was also the opening for Hugh Masekela's great concert in Suttgart which was not sure because Hugh had to visit hospital in the morning - he had an accident with his arm. "If that accident would not happend, I really played with you guys" told us Hugh in a video statement - You will find his statement as well as other statements in videos form the event - they will be ready in the next day. Fana, Lee-Roy and Francis met up in the afternoon of the concert with the Sawubona Acoustics Band at the University Of Suttgart for very first rehearsal. Werner said: It's magic how they find their ways into the songs from the begining. For us it was a great rehearsal and concert with such outstanding musicians". Fana was already member of the old SAWUBONA band 1998/1999 and he said "it is absolutly great to relaunch the project on an Internet platform".

Siyabonga, Fana, Francis and Lee-Roy for the magic collaboration, siyabonga Hugh and all members of his band for the great concert in Suttgart!

Robben Island and Langa

Yesterday we used the sunshine to visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was arrested for 18 years. An ex political prisoner gave us a little insight about the things happened here. The rest of the day we spent in Langa staying at Mthunzi's mother's house where we had an original braii with lots of people coming around. Not just the food was delicious. There was also wonderful music around when the band jammed and the others joined with singing and dancing. They also sang some african songs… Continue

Sawubona UPDATE
About a year ago we started with SAWUBONA and "Songs Of Good Hope" and there are a lot of good songs on the blog. Siyabonga, thank you all, for all contributions so far. Now it's time to sort out where we are with the "Songs Of Good Hope". We have songs for almost every "Song Of Good Hope". Some of the songs are more or less ready to use, some are still in draft versions and it's time to make all this contributions transparent. As we are still waiting for the MusicFactory and expect to get ready within the next 4 weeks, please check the list if we have listed all your contributions. The list will be the basic for the MusicFactory.

There is still a big challenge to work more on the songs and room for improvment for draft versions. Lyrics like "Ouma", "Monica", "Ben" and "Dealing With The Past" could have a change to get more music versions.

We plan for the end of this year a first CD and all songs for this first publishing must be ready until 1 October 2009. A second CD will follow in spring 2010. It would be absolutly great to get your musical input until the end of September this year!

Here is the list of the lyrics and songs - update 9 April 2009

Please send us a comment if we have overseen some contributions!

The Field Band Foundation - A Great South African Musicproject

SAWUBONA is in contact with the Field Band Foundation in South Africa and we want to discuss how we can work together. The Field Band concept is built on the global youth activity known otherwise as show bands. This specific discipline was chosen first for the long historic presence of brass music in South African communities. This activity also allows for large group participation. All 24 projects of the Foundation have a minimum of 125 youths actively involved. Today, the FBF has about 4,000 participants.
